Mechanical Testing with METL
METL is a equipped with a full mechanical testing lab for routine testing as well as customized projects and fixtures. Our mechanical testing is supported by an in-house machine shop capable of preparing precision test specimens from a wide variety of materials. We offer traditional sectioning methods alongside EDM sectioning, low-stress grinding and highly accurate milling and lathe turning.
Tensile Testing
We perform tensile testing on a variety of materials in accordance with ASTM E8. We can fabricate standard specimens in our machine shop as well as custom fixtures for more unique requirements. Tensile testing of selected non-metallic materials is also available. Give us a call to see what we can do for you!
Applicable Specifications
ASTM E8, ASTM B557, ASTM A370, ASTM D638, ASTM D1414, ASTM D412
Hardness
Discover the hardness of the materials you are working with. We test in Rockwell, Brinell, and superficial scales. We can also perform microhardness on polished samples in Vickers and Knoop scales.
Applicable Specifications
ASTM E18, ASTM E384, ASTM E10, ASTM D2240
Furnace Certification for Aluminum
METL provides metallographic and mechanical testing to certify aluminum heat treat furnaces. Testing is in accordance with standards such as AMS 2772, MIL-H-6088 and others.

Shear Testing
Our shear testing capabilities include fastener, double lap, and single lap shear tests. Custom diameter fixturing is available upon request.
Applicable Specifications
ASTM F606, ASTM B565, MIL-STD-1312-13
Charpy Impact
Charpy V-notch testing measures the energy absorption of a material during fracture. For many materials, notch toughness is a critical property. METL can produce Charpy specimens that meet the tight tolerances required by industry specifications and test them over a wide range of temperatures.
Applicable Specifications
ASTM E23
Embrittlement
This test is designed to identify potential embrittling conditions and/or the effectiveness of mitigation methods that are used to limit hydrogen damage during special processing on higher strength steel parts.
Applicable Specifications
ASTM F519
Stress-Rupture
METL can perform stress-rupture testing on both smooth and notched combination bars depending on your specification requirements.
Applicable Specifications
ASTM E139, ASTM E292
Elevated Temperature Tensile Testing
Require tensile testing for high temperature environments? Let us help! Mounted oven chambers give us the ability to test your material in a wide range of temperatures.
Applicable Specifications
ASTM E21

Commonly Asked Questions
Can METL test assemblies?
Depending on the size and configuration of your assembly, we can customize fixtures to replicate forces in the directions experienced in service.
Will METL test materials that have been in service?
It is common to test components that have been in service, especially to compare them to unused versions of the same part. In fact, we recommend tensile testing of failed components to help categorize the material completely before the failure analysis is concluded. Parts that have been in service may not reflect their original form or condition.
Can METL test sub-size components?
ASTM E8 allows for a range of sub-size tensile specimens with modified diameters and gauge lengths. We can test in accordance with specifications or even test modified geometries if parts are very small. Sub-size tests can provide useful data but should be considered for reference only if they are not in accordance with specification requirements.
